EnSight GUI problems with Ubuntu and Compiz Linux distributions

Many Linux distributions have been making the OpenGL compositor "Compiz" the default desktop environment recently.  This system has a number of features that make it incompatible with EnSight.  It disables many of the higher-end graphics features and is unstable under heavy graphics loads. OpenGL applications running under the compiz system also tend to render much more slowly that without the system in place.

It is strongly recommended that user disable compiz when using EnSight. The feature is sometimes referred to as "desktop effects" or "visual effects" in Linux setup/appearance configuration managers.  Turning off these effects tends to make a system more stable and it allows EnSight to render faster.

In recent Ubuntu distributions (around 11.04), there is an option on the main login screen to select: "Classic No Effects" which also works around the issue.
